Is Your Kitchen Ready for Summer Hosting?

As the weather warms up along Lake Michigan, life naturally starts to shift.

Windows open, people stop by more often, and weekends start to fill up with graduation parties, Fourth of July get-togethers, BBQs, and time spent outside as much as possible.

And almost every time, people end up in the kitchen! 🍴🍎

It’s where food is prepped, drinks are grabbed, and conversations happen. Whether you're coming in from the lake, the backyard, or hosting a house full of friends and family, it tends to become the place everyone gathers without even trying.

But this time of year also has a way of pointing out what isn’t working.

When Your Kitchen Starts to Feel Tight

You might notice it when:

  • There’s not quite enough counter space once food is out

  • People are constantly in each other’s way 😒

  • There’s nowhere for guests to sit or gather comfortably

  • You feel cut off from everything happening outside

It’s not always something you think about during the winter….but once the house fills up a bit more, it becomes obvious!

It’s Not Always About a Full Remodel

Sometimes it’s small things:

  • Better lighting 💡

  • A little more usable space

  • Opening up a wall or layout

And sometimes, it’s realizing your kitchen just doesn’t fit how you live anymore.

Summer just has a way of bringing that to the surface.

What Actually Makes a Kitchen Work for Hosting

When a kitchen feels crowded or frustrating, it’s usually not about size, it’s about how the space functions.

A few things that tend to make the biggest difference:

  • Clear movement paths: People shouldn’t have to squeeze past each other to get to the fridge, sink, or outside.

  • Enough landing space: Even an extra stretch of counter near the sink or fridge can make hosting feel easier.

  • A place for people to gather (without being in the way): An island, seating area, or even just a defined edge where guests naturally land.

  • Connection to the rest of the home (and outdoors): Especially in the summer, being able to see and move easily between spaces matters more than you might think! 🪟

Most kitchens that feel good during a busy weekend aren’t necessarily bigger, they’re just laid out with real life in mind!

Looking Ahead

For a lot of homeowners, summer is when the idea starts…and fall or winter is when projects actually happen!

Taking some time now to notice what’s working, and what’s not, can make those future decisions a lot easier.

If you’ve been noticing some of these things lately, it might be a good time to start taking note about what you’d change. Whenever you feel ready to take the next step, you can always reach out!
