Breathing New Life

Into a Lower Level

Refreshing an older home's lower level with updated finishes, improved comfort, and more usable space.

A Basement Transformation | Custer, MI

Older homes have a way of holding onto their history, and this one had a few surprises tucked away. For a returning client, we took on a basement remodel that brought new life to several areas of the home, making the lower level feel brighter, more comfortable, and ready for everyday use.

A Fresh Start for the Basement

The project included updates to the front room, bedroom, stairwells, and storage areas. Worn wall finishes, old plaster, and outdated flooring were replaced with fresh surfaces and finishes that gave the basement a more cohesive feel.

We also reworked parts of the front room to accommodate a new kitchenette, complete with white cabinetry, a countertop, and a stainless steel sink. It’s a practical addition that makes the space more versatile for everything from casual gatherings to everyday use.

A Few Surprises Along the Way

Renovating an older home sometimes means uncovering pieces of its past. During demolition, we found a few unexpected items hidden behind the walls, including a wooden block, a small tin, a newspaper from 1912, and even a drawing.

Discoveries like these are always a fun reminder of the stories older homes hold, even in the places you wouldn't expect!

The Details That Make a Difference

Throughout the basement, new drywall, fresh paint, and updated flooring helped bring everything together. We replaced four older basement windows with new vinyl windows, bringing a fresh look to the rooms and helping make the most of the natural light available.

The stairwells received attention, too, with refreshed walls and ceilings, refinished stair treads and risers, and updated railing details. We also added a new closet in the bathroom and improved the storage areas to make the basement more functional!

To round out the project, we installed a new central air conditioning system, adding another layer of comfort to the home.

A More Comfortable Space to Enjoy

With the updates complete, the basement feels more finished and inviting, with refreshed living areas, a convenient kitchenette, and improved comfort throughout. What was once a collection of dated rooms is now a more cohesive extension of the home, with space to relax, host guests, and make better use of every square foot.

We're always glad to work with returning clients and help them continue making their homes work better for them!

“Great company to work worth. The project manager kept me informed as the project progressed. They asked me if I had any concerns with how the job was going. The crew are great carpenters. Matthew 6 Construction gets the job done on time and on budget.”
