Breathing New Life Into a Family Cottage
After years of wear and structural issues, this family cottage was rebuilt into a modern lakefront retreat.
A New Chapter for a Beloved Cottage | Ludington, MI
Some homes hold years of memories, and this lakefront cottage was one of them. But after years of wear, uneven floors, and structural concerns related to the high water table, the home needed more than a typical renovation.
The decision was made to start fresh. We removed the existing structure and block foundation and rebuilt the cottage from the ground up, creating an opportunity to address the property's challenges while reimagining the space for the family's needs.
The goal wasn't to lose what made the cottage special. It was to give it a new beginning, with the comfort, functionality, and durability needed to enjoy it for years to come.
Built Around the Property
With a tight lakefront lot, making the most of the available space was an important part of the planning process. The new cottage features two bedrooms, one full bathroom, and one half bath, with a layout designed to feel comfortable and practical without losing the charm of a smaller lake home.
Just as important was building a strong foundation for the future. The new crawl space includes a vapor barrier beneath the concrete floor, perimeter sealing, insulation along the foundation walls, and a sump pump system to help manage the challenges associated with the high water table.
From the foundation to the roof, each part of the rebuild was an opportunity to create a home better suited to its setting and the way the family wants to use it.
A Fresh Look Inside and Out
The finished cottage brings together clean lines, warm finishes, and a simple, timeless style that feels right at home along the Michigan shoreline.
Outside, rockslide-colored board-and-batten siding gives the home a fresh appearance, complemented by black windows, a black entry door, and crisp white trim and soffits. A new 10-by-30-foot treated pine deck stretches along the south side of the home, creating a generous outdoor space for relaxing and enjoying the lakefront setting.
Inside, the design continues with Brookfield Maple luxury vinyl plank flooring, white interior trim, and carefully selected finishes that keep the space feeling bright and inviting.
The kitchen combines Mantra cabinetry in Hammock with Aria quartz countertops and a black rectangular sink. Matte black plumbing fixtures add contrast throughout the home, bringing a consistent, modern touch to the kitchen and bathrooms.
Every selection works together to create a home that feels updated without being overly formal, a comfortable cottage designed for everyday living.
Comfort in Every Season
A lakefront home needs to work well beyond the summer months. Along with the updated finishes, the rebuild included improvements designed to support year-round comfort and long-term performance.
The home features R-21 exterior wall insulation, R-50 ceiling insulation, and a mini-split heating and cooling system serving the bedrooms and living area. New Windgate by Alliance windows, a GAF Timberline HDZ shingle roof, and a new gutter system complete the exterior improvements.
These details may not be the first things you notice in the finished photos, but they play an important role in making the home more comfortable and better equipped for Michigan's changing seasons.
A Lake Cottage Ready for What's Next
What began as a cottage facing significant structural and functional challenges has become a fresh, welcoming home with a new foundation, an improved layout, and finishes chosen to balance style with everyday practicality.
The result is more than a new-looking cottage. It's a home that honors the property's history while giving the family a space to gather, unwind, and continue making memories by the lake.
