Breathing New Life Into a Lower Level

This basement remodel was completed for a returning client who owns an older home full of character. While the house has plenty of charm, the basement was ready for some attention. The goal was to turn the space into something more usable and inviting, adding extra living space while keeping the personality of the home intact!

Refreshing the Existing Space

Custer, MI

This project focused on revamping the spaces that were already there. The basement includes a bedroom, a common area with a wet bar, and the stairway leading up to the main floor, all of which were refreshed to give the space a cleaner, more finished feel.

The original walls were a mix of drywall and old plaster that had seen better days. During demolition, those materials were removed and replaced, creating a smooth, updated foundation for the remodel.

A Few Surprises Along the Way

Working in older homes often comes with unexpected discoveries, and this project was no exception. While opening the walls, we uncovered a few interesting items tucked away over the years, a wooden block, a small tin, a 1912 newspaper, and even a drawing. Finds like these are always a fun reminder of the history hidden inside older homes!

Letting the Light In

One of the advantages of this basement is that part of it sits above ground level, allowing for larger windows and more natural light. We removed four older windows and replaced them with new Hawthorne vinyl basement hopper windows, installed in the bedroom, front room, storage area, and stairwell. The updated windows bring in even more light, helping the basement feel open and welcoming.

To complete the space, we installed Coretec Pro luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout the finished areas. The wet bar was finished with a Formica countertop and matching backsplash, creating a simple and functional spot for gathering and entertaining.

A Basement Ready to Be Enjoyed

With the remodel complete, the basement now feels bright, refreshed, and ready to be lived in. What was once a dated lower level is now a comfortable extension of the home, perfect for relaxing, hosting guests, or simply enjoying a little extra space!

“Great company to work worth. The project manager kept me informed as the project progressed. They asked me if I had any concerns with how the job was going. The crew are great carpenters. Matthew 6 Construction gets the job done on time and on budget.”
