This cherished lakefront cottage in Michigan had served the family for years but was showing its age. Uneven floors, outdated layouts, and structural damage from a high water table made it difficult to enjoy the home safely and comfortably. The decision was made to start fresh! Tear down the old cottage and rebuild a modern, functional, and charming lakefront retreat.

Take a look at the before photos below.

Breathing New Life Into a Family Cottage

Reimagining the Space

Ludington, MI

With a tight lot, every inch of the new cottage needed to be thoughtfully planned. The layout includes two bedrooms and one full and one half bathroom, maximizing space while keeping it cozy and inviting. A crawl space with a sump pump protects the home from moisture, and a front deck replaces the old one, giving the family a perfect spot to enjoy the lake views.

Thoughtful Material Choices

The family wanted a mix of durability, comfort, and style. To meet that goal, we’re using high-quality materials throughout:

  • Windows: Windgate by Alliance for energy efficiency and long-lasting performance

  • Roofing: GAF shingles designed to withstand the elements

  • Heating & Cooling: Mini splits for efficient, year-round comfort

  • Flooring: Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) for durability and easy care

  • Kitchen Counters: Aria quartz for beauty and longevity

  • Deck: Treated lumber built to handle lakefront conditions

Challenges Along the Way

Building on a lakefront lot comes with its own unique challenges. The high water table required careful planning for the foundation and crawl space to ensure the cottage would be safe, dry, and built to last. Every decision had to account for this, creating a solid and durable home for the family to enjoy for years to come.

Construction in Progress

We’re now nearing the finish line. The exterior is complete, and inside the cottage, the kitchen countertops are installed, the bathroom vanity tops are set, the shower unit is in place, and all the light fixtures are up. It’s so satisfying to see the space start to take shape and truly feel like a home. Next up, we’ll finish the interior touches and the front deck, bringing this lakefront retreat to life for the family to enjoy.
